Last week was Canadian National Non-Smoking Week (January 18 to 24, 2009). Here are some facts to consider:

  • Smoking is the number one cause of preventable home fire deaths in Canada, and has been for decades.
  • Around half of all Canadians who have ever smoked have already successfully quit.
  • 50% of Canadian smokers age 15-24 quit in 1999, and 61% of the same group quit in 2007.
  • Smoking is the top preventable cause of death in Canada, beating alcohol, car accidents, illicit drug use, murder, suicide and AIDS combined.
  • Fewer Canadians are smoking every year, and Canada is at the forefront of anti-smoking legislation.
  • For more information on quitting smoking, check out about.com's quit smoking guidesite.
