Definition:

Spiking is the process of sneaking a psychoactive substance into someone else's drink, food, or other drugs in order to intoxicate them without their knowledge. Motivations for spiking can range from date rape, to practical joking, to malice, to "helping" someone chill out. In any event, spiking is a highly irresponsible act, that can lead to negative unforseen consequences for the person whose drink is spiked.

Common spiking methods include:

  • adding a stronger alcoholic drink, such as vodka, to a non-alcoholic drink such as orange juice, or to a weaker drink, such as wine
  • adding a drug, such as LSD or ketamine to someone's drink
  • adding a stronger drug, such as heroin, to a weaker drug, such as cannabis -- this technique can also be used for cutting drugs, although the intention of cutting is different
Pronunciation: spI-king
Also Known As: lacing
Examples:
Serena was sexually assaulted as a result of someone spiking her drink with a date rape drug.
