Find Good Role Models

If your parents have addictions, they are not showing you a healthy way of preparing for being an adult. They are showing you that addictions are the way to solve your problems and to enjoy life.

To avoid becoming like them, look to other adults who you admire, and find some good “role models.” Role models are people who already are the way that you would like to be. They could be a teacher, a counselor, a friend’s parent, a doctor, or someone else who you would like to be like when you grow up.

Notice the way they talk to other people, the way they dress, and the way they handle situations. It is OK to be like adults who are not your parents, especially if they are healthy, happy and kind.
