What Is an EEG?

Definition: EEG is the the measurement of electrical activity in the brain using electrodes attached to the scalp. The electrodes are used to detect electricity produced by the brain, not to transmit electricity into the brain.

EEG is used extensively in the diagnosis of seizure disorders (such as epilepsy) and other neurological conditions, as well as in neurotherapy and research.

Also Known As: electroencephalography, electroencephalogram
Examples: After Tracey had a seizure, her doctor referred her for an EEG.
