Definition of Maladaptive

Definition:

Behavior which is not adaptive to the individual.

Adaptive means the behavior is useful to the individual, generally considered to be appropriate, or helpful to the adjustment of the individual.

Adjustment refers to the individual developing a positive relationship with his or her environment, which facilitates the fulfillment of the potential of the individual.

Pronunciation: mal-ad-Ap-tiv
Also Known As: Adaptive tends to be used instead of the more outdated terms "normal" and "sane."
Examples: Drug-seeking behavior is maladaptive, as it leave less time and resources for other essential behaviors, such as eating, engaging in relationships (other than those related to drug acquisition and use), and work.
