Definition: Motivation, in the context of addiction, refers to an individual's wish to change his or her addictive behavior. It also refers to his or her drive to do what is necessary to bring about that change.

Motivation is important to overcoming addiction. If the person does not wish to change, or does not have the necessary drive to make changes and overcome obstacles for change, recovery is unlikely.

Pronunciation: mO-ti-vay-shun
Also Known As: wish, desire, drive
Examples: Jessica has a strong motivation to change, which carried her through the discomfort of overcoming her addiction.
