Definition: In the general sense, arousal refers to a state of being awake, alert, and ready for action. More specifically, it can be used to refer to sexual arousal, which is a state of readiness for sexual activity. It also can be used to describe states of alertness and readiness that are induced by psychoactive substances or addictive behaviors.
